How to Prepare for an Engagement Shoot

Engagement photos will be something you cherish for years. They’re not only a chance to capture and announce a major life change but also a great opportunity for you to get to know your wedding photographer before the big day. One of the most asked questions we get asked though is “how do we prepare for our engagement photos?”

Here are a few helpful tips to get you ready for your engagement photography session!

Decide on Story & Style

Before you head out to your engagement shoot, think about what you want your photos to look like. Is there a story you want to tell? Do you want a more casual vibe or formal? Discussing this ahead of time with your engagement photographer will make it easier for both you and them to plan for the session.

Plan Outfits

It’s important to plan your outfits ahead of time. We have a few tips on what to wear to your engagement photos, but it’s most important for you and your significant other to feel comfortable! Make sure your outfits match the style you’re going for and that you and you SO match. You can even bring along multiple outfits if you want to do a change. We recommend you keep accessories and jewelry pretty simple though, as you ultimately want the engagement ring to be the star!

Check the Weather

Weather can be frustrating to plan around but it’s always good to prepare. If there’s a chance of rain bring along an umbrella, and if it might get chilly bring along a jacket. Not being prepared for the weather can turn a pleasant experience into a bad one.

Scout Locations

Location is key to engagement photos. The location sets up the tone and scene for how the photographs will look. It also impacts your outfit choice, so it’s a good idea to pick and scout your location ahead of time. Run ideas by your photographer as well as they might have feedback that could help. It will also allow your photographer to get prepared in terms of lighting and equipment as well.

Bring Props

Props are a great way to tell a story and add something extra to your engagement photos. They also give you and your SO something to interact with, which can relieve any awkwardness or anxiety about having your photo taken. Some fun prop ideas are umbrellas, flowers, wine, picnic, or even your pets! If you bring your pets, be sure to warn your photographer and bring along a friend to help wrangle them during pictures when you’re not using them.

Get Dolled Up

Most couples use their engagement photos for save-the-dates, social media announcements, and wedding décor. In other words, you’ll be seeing your engagement pictures a lot so you’ll want to look your best! This goes for both the bride and groom to be. Make sure you make an effort to do your hair and makeup and wear an outfit you feel great in. For women, engagement photos could be a great chance to do a trial run for your wedding hair and makeup. Doing your own hair and makeup is also great for a more natural look. Ultimately though, you want you and your SO to look like yourself so don’t go too overboard!
