What to Do Before Putting on Your Wedding Dress

There is nothing like the build-up of excitement as you get ready for your wedding day. For brides, slipping into their wedding dress is one of the final steps before you head down the aisle. Finally wearing your wedding gown is a monumental moment, but modern wedding gowns can be difficult to get in and out of, and their high price means you’re going to want to handle them with care. Given that, here are a few things you should do BEFORE you put on your wedding dress.

Wash Your Hands

No matter how expensive your wedding gown is, you’re not going to want it to get dirty before you walk down the aisle. That’s why before you even touch your dress, you should thoroughly wash your hands. Even if they look clean, some fabrics are highly sensitive, and skin oils or hidden dirt may leave marks. Just play it safe and wash them before you slip your dress on.

Moisturize Your Body

Every bride wants soft, dewy-looking skin on their big day. While your makeup artist will take care of your face, you’ll probably also want to make sure your arms and legs look hydrated by moisturizing. Make sure you apply lotion before you put on your dress. Not only will it be easier to apply without the restrictions of the dress, but it also reduces the risk of any ending up on your gown.

Eat and Drink

One of the most common mistakes brides make on their wedding day is that they don’t eat or stay hydrated ahead of time. While being nervous is normal, our wedding photographers always encourage brides to get something in them before they head down the aisle. Your wedding day will be long, and you’ll need sustenance. Just make sure you consume everything before getting into your dress.

Get Hair and Makeup Done

Professional wedding hair and makeup artists know to complete their work before the bride finishes getting ready, but if you’re doing your own or are relying on a close friend, don’t make the mistake of getting all dolled up after you’re dressed. Not only do you risk staining, but you’ll also risk sweating in it and wrinkling it. Putting on your wedding dress should be the last thing you do to get ready other than shoes and accessories.

Put on Undergarments

Now, this should go without saying, but you should put on undergarments before your dress. This might seem like a no-brainer; however, this also includes special wedding details that you might not normally wear like tights, pantyhose, and garters.

Use the Bathroom

The absolute last thing you should do before you slip on your wedding dress is to use the bathroom! Even if you don’t feel the need, force yourself to go. Once that gown is on, doing simple things like using the toilet is going to get much more challenging. Putting on the dress also signals go-time, so you’ll be too busy taking photos or walking down the aisle to go for a while afterward.
