Did you and your significant other recently get engaged? Once the news is shared, and congratulations are given, you may want to start thinking about documenting the engagement with photos! At AGI, engagement photography is one of our favorite things to do. Our photographers love to explore new locations and capture the fun personalities of our clients. People often have a lot of questions about engagement photo shoots, so our wedding photographers have answered some of the most common questions.
Is engagement photography a necessity?
Well, no. Engagement photography sessions aren’t as necessary as, say, the rings and minister, however, they are important and have a lot of advantages. Engagement photos are a great way to announce your engagement to the world. The photos can also have a lot of different uses, such as save-the-dates and wedding slide shows. One of the best reasons to do an engagement shoot, though is that it gives you a chance to get to know your wedding photographer and get comfortable in front of the camera. A lot of wedding photographers also do packages that include an engagement session, so they won’t necessarily break the bank if money is a concern.
When should an engagement shoot happen?
This depends entirely on your wedding timeline. Engagements last 13-18 months on average, although the pandemic has extended this. Generally, our photographers recommend doing an engagement shoot around 6 months before the wedding day. This allows time for editing and reshoots and gives you enough time to use them for save-the-dates and formal engagement announcements.
When is the best time of year for engagement photos?
Engagement photography can happen at any time of the year. However, the winter and fall months tend to be the most popular. This makes sense when you think about the fact that the peak wedding season is spring and summer. Toronto has tons of beautiful fall and winter locations, and twinkling lights and colorful leaves are the perfect, romantic backdrop to any engagement photo.
What should we wear to an engagement photography session?
One of the most common questions we get asked by couples is what they should wear to an engagement session. When it comes to engagement photography, people tend to go one of two routes. Either they go for a more formal style, where they wear a nice suit or dress, or they opt for a more laid-back vibe and wear tidy but casual outfits. Both choices are valid! No matter what style you choose, we recommend you pick something that is comfortable and that you feel good in. Don’t forget to factor the weather into your clothing decision and the location. For example, if you’re shooting in the woods, you may not want to wear green since you won’t stand out.
Should we bring anyone along to the photo shoot?
This one is entirely your call! As engagement photographers, we absolutely don’t mind if you want a friend or your parents to tag along and watch. In fact, having an extra set of hands can be helpful, especially if there are props involved, a lot of walking, and the temperamental weather. Some couples like to include their pets as well, which is always fun! We do recommend bringing along someone if you include your pets, though, as you’ll need someone to watch and entertain in the shots they’re not involved in.
